Lacrosse recruiting questionnaires: do they matter?

Fill them out. Then send an email, because the form alone does almost nothing.

A recruiting questionnaire puts you into a program database. It rarely puts you on a coach radar by itself. Fill one out for every school you are seriously interested in, since some coaches will not engage until you have, then follow it with a direct email containing your film. The email is what gets read.

What a recruiting questionnaire actually is

Nearly every college lacrosse program has one, usually linked from the athletics site under a recruiting or prospective student athlete heading. It collects your grad year, position, contact details, academics, club team, and a film link.

What happens next is unglamorous. The submission lands in a database that a staff can search and sort. Some programs review new entries regularly. Many look at them only when they are already searching for a name or filling a specific need.

Why coaches still want you to fill it out

Compliance and organization. Some staffs will not begin a conversation until you exist in their system, and a few will explicitly reply to a first email by asking you to complete the questionnaire. Doing it up front removes a step.

Do they generate interest on their own?

Almost never. A questionnaire is a passive record. Nobody is browsing the database hoping to discover a player, in the same way nobody is browsing a recruiting platform for that purpose.

What moves a coach is watching you play, and what gets them to watch is a direct email with film and a schedule. The questionnaire is a supporting document, not the pitch.

How to fill one out properly

  1. Use your real name and a clean email address, the same one you email coaches from, so a staff can connect the two records.
  2. Put a working public film link in every field that accepts one. This is the single most valuable thing on the form.
  3. Be accurate about grad year and position. Coaches search by both, and an error here makes you invisible to the search.
  4. Include GPA and test scores if the form asks. At Division III especially, this is what determines whether you are viable.
  5. List your club team by its recognizable name, not an abbreviation only your region uses.
  6. Add upcoming events with dates if there is a free text field.

The sequence that works

Order matters more than most recruits realize:

  1. Fill out the questionnaire so you exist in the system.
  2. Send a direct email to the head coach the same week, with film in the first few lines and one sentence about that program.
  3. Mention in the email that you have completed the questionnaire. It saves the coach a step and signals you did the homework.
  4. Follow up every six to eight weeks with genuinely new information.

Recruits who submit forty questionnaires and send no emails typically hear nothing and conclude that recruiting is impossible. The forms were never going to do that work.

What the automated reply means

Most questionnaires trigger an automatic confirmation email, sometimes with camp information attached. It is worth being clear that this is not coach interest. It is a mail merge, and every recruit who filled out the form got the same message.

Camp invitations that arrive this way are marketing for the camp, not an evaluation of you. A camp can still be worth attending, particularly if you have already made contact with that staff and they know to watch for you, but treat the invitation as an advertisement rather than as recruitment.

How many should you fill out

One for every school you would genuinely consider attending, which for most recruits means twenty to fifty across divisions. They take a few minutes each once you have your information in one place.

Keep a spreadsheet of which schools you have completed, when you submitted, and when you last emailed. Six months in, without a record, you will not remember, and duplicate submissions to the same program look careless.
